Theater Svoboda
The documentary film Theatre Svoboda looks back at the life of the pioneering Czech scenographer Josef Svoboda, through the eyes of his grandson Jakub Hejna. Retracing the footsteps of his grandfather, Hejna constructs a portrait of a man who changed the course of modern theatre, from the avant-garde of the 1940s up to the 1990s and through the futuristic vision of the 1960s.
Traveling through time and into Svoboda’s mind, the film surveys more than 30 years of production, exploring both the Czech National Theater and the scenographer’s studio. The documentary reveals the secrets of the stage sets themselves, but also of Svoboda’s informant activities for Czech State Security. Theatre Svoboda provides a unique perspective on the man responsible for the first multimedia projections, presented at the Czech Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montréal.
Sarah Pierce’s exhibition Illusions perdues / Lost Illusions - Part 3 held at SBC also includes recently discovered films made by Svoboda, generating a unique dialogue between the vision of the scenographer and Pierce’s work.
