SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nuria Carton de Grammont to the position of Director and Curator of SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art.

 

“On behalf of the Gallery, I would like to say that we are delighted by this appointment at this vital juncture of the Gallery’s evolution” said Davide Pisanu, President of gallery’s the Board of Directors. “SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art occupies a unique position in the cultural landscape of Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Through its history, the Gallery has striven to exhibit and promote challenging artwork and actively foster new lines of critical investigation. We believe Nuria Carton de Grammont is ideally suited to usher the institution through the challenging situation an exhibiting institution such as ours faces in a world radically reshaped by the current pandemic. She brings a wealth of curatorial research, a track record of openness and curiosity in various forms of representation, as well as sound cultural management experience to the table.”

 

“I am thrilled to take on this position, as I have been a keen observer of SBC Gallery’s growth and I admired the rigour of Pip Day’s direction” said Nuria Carton de Grammont. “As Davide mentioned, these are daunting times for all cultural organizations. I believe that the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art has, at its kernel, the elements to expand its role in the dynamic, constantly shifting environment of contemporary art in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, throughout Québec and Canada and internationally. I feel honoured to have been selected to lead the gallery as a new chapter opens.”

 

Nuria Carton de Grammont received her doctorate in art history from Concordia University in 2012. Her undergraduate studies took place in her native Mexico at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Upon graduation she came to Tiohtià:ke/Montréal in 2004 to study at UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal) where she earned a Master of Arts degree in 2006. She was most recently interim director at Centre des arts actuels Skol. From 2013 to 2016 she was the Coordinator of the Réseau d’études sur l’Amérique latine of CERIUM at Université de Montréal.

 

She recently curated Uno, dos, tres por mí y mis compañeras at Optica Centre d’art contemporain in January of this year. Effets personnels / Personal belonging / Objetos personales was developed with Maria Ezcurra for Connexions program of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal in the fall of 2018. She co-curated Milpa, ritual imprescindible for the botanical gardens of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México that ran from November 2015 through March 2016.

 

She has published widely. Among her recent publications is the collection of essays Politics, Culture and Economy in Popular Practices in the Americas, co-edited with Eduardo González Castillo and Jorge Pantaléon (Bern, Switzerland, Peter Lang, 2016). In 2018, with Tatiana Navallo, she published “Poétiques du déplacement dans la pratique performative latino-québécoise” in Vues transversales. Panorama de la scène artistique latino-québécoise.

 

The Board of Directors of SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art would like to thank Pip Day, once again, for her dedication and service to the gallery from 2012 to 2019. Dr. Nuria Carton de Grammont succeeds her effective immediately.
