WRITING WITH THE BODY

19.11.2024 - 14.12.2024

Curated by Marcela Bórquez

Renata Cervetto and Carla Rangel

Initiated and organized by Marcela Borquez, Renata Cervetto and Carla Rangel, Writing With The Body is a one-month public program celebrating the legacy of Chicana feminist, queer, and decolonial thinker Gloria Anzaldúa. Running from November 19 to December 14, the program explores the gallery space as a porous learning environment, able to accommodate diverse actions and uses, drawing on Anzaldua’s call to action in exploring identity, creativity, and language.

Twenty years after her passing, Anzaldúa’s radical reimagination of borders and her advocacy for spiritual and political freedom resonate strongly. The program focuses on her embodied and situated approach and reflects our belief that her contributions offer valuable insights into cultural mediation, alternative pedagogies, and community building within the context of Montreal.

By inviting artists closely aligned with Anzaldúa's vision to conceive and guide moments of encounter and exchange, we seek to explore how her philosophy can enrich creative processes across disciplines. Contributions from Verena Melgarejo Weinandt, Amanda Gutiérrez, Florencia Sosa Rey, Colectiva Polea, and Helena Martin Franco will propose new paths to engage with her work and ideas.

This public program is made possible through partnerships with Artenso (Research and Innovation Centre for Art and Social Engagement), LabARD (Arts Research Laboratory in Decoloniality of UQAM), centre Turbine, OMEC-INRS (Observatory of Cultural Mediations) and DARE-DARE.
