At the center of the film installation 10104 Angelo View Drive stands a modernistic single-family homestead designed by the American architect John Lautner, which has been serving, in numerous Hollywood productions, as a place that harbours scenes of “evil”.

Margreiter approaches this constructed nightmare of the Western nuclear family from several perspectives. In short filmed sequences she shows unexpected ways of utilizing or socially sharing this building, while simultaneously questioning the conventions of the cinematic representation.

For STAGE SET STAGE, Margreiter discusses the context and evolution of her new work Broken Sequence, which she recently shot in the vernacular landscape of a dilapidated - and in the meantime torn down - Disney-esque amusement park outside of Bejing. The film is a sequence of static images that conveys the past and the present through Margreiter’s manipulation of ambient sound, echoing the conflict of the ultimate capitalist dreamscape with the communist reality of this abandoned site. This site, over its decade long failure to come to realisation, was both appropriated by farmers and served as a liminal meeting space for gay and trans-gender communities.

Dorit Margreiter was born in Austria in 1967 and currently lives and works in Vienna. She studied first at the University of Vienna and later at the University for Applied Arts, also in Vienna. Margreiter’s work explores the relationship between film and video and the physical and social dimensions of architecture, often creating installations for the presentation of film and video works to augment and accentuate this relationship. Margreiter’s work was exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Museo Nacional Centro the Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid in 2011, at the SVIT Praha in Prag in 2010 and the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles in 2009, to name only a few. Her work was included in many group exhibitions organized by such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art in New York,  the Generali Foundation in Vienna, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey in Mexico and the MUMOK in Vienna.
