SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to present Temps – Dialogue sur l’art contemporain du Sénégal, an exhibition presented at two venues: SBC and at the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels). For the exhibition, guest curator Pierre Beaudoin commissioned six Senegalese artists to create new works based on the notion of time. The exhibition brings together three generations of multidisciplinary artists whose range of media includes painting, photography, video and installation. Artists Aïcha Aïdara, Samba Fall and Pape Seydi will be featured at SBC while Serigne Mbaye Camara, Piniang and Fatou Kandé Senghor will be showing at the MAI.

Conceptualized and researched over the past three years, this exhibition has been a labour of love for Beaudoin. In order to develop a sense of cohesion during the creative process, the curator and the artists initiated an exchange of ideas which focused on the concept of time. From this starting point the dialogue led to discussions about the economy, labour, religion, fundamental values and globalization.



In Canada, where we tend to focus on European, North American and Asian art, African art remains largely marginalized. Beaudoin hopes this exhibition will validate and promote contemporary Senegalese art and break the often inaccurate images of Africa projected by the media.



The opening will take place April 2nd in the presence of the Ambassador of Senegal, his Excellency Amadou Tidiane Wone. Temps – Dialogue sur l’art contemporain du Sénégal is pleased to be part of Vues d’Afrique’s Rallye-Expos 2011 and local celebrations for Senegal’s 2011 independence anniversary. This exhibition will be presented during Dak’Art 2012, the biennial of Contemporary African Art. Temps – Dialogue sur l’art contemporain du Sénégal is presented with support from l'Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.
