INFORMATION
Departing from Amanda Gutíerrez artistic approach to sound ethnographies, this listening session will open a discussion around the colonial implications of early sound archives. We will begin by playing a few museum and sound library archives showcasing indigenous cultures from South America and follow up with a conversatorio where we’ll adopt a critical perspective, examining how sound recordings played a fundamental role in colonialism and extractionism. In this session, we invite listeners to explore the dimensions and complexities of colonial power embedded within sonic archives. The main goal of the gathering is to foster inter-subjectivity, from which ‘critical listening positionality’ (Robinson, 2020) can be enacted and reflected.
*A conversatorio is a space constructed through open dialogue, where reciprocity as well as contradiction create new perspectives departing from each participant's specific positionality.
Leah Decter est une artiste inter-média/performance blanche basée entre le territoire du Traité 1 à Winnipeg et K'jipuktuk où elle est titulaire d'une chaire de recherche du Canada en technologies créatives à l'université NSCAD. Son travail en solo et en collaboration aborde et perturbe la dynamique coloniale par le biais de l'éthique de la responsabilité intergénérationnelle et de l'être en relation dans les espaces de souveraineté autochtone. Elle a exposé, présenté et projeté ses œuvres au Canada et dans le monde entier, aux États-Unis, au Royaume-Uni, en Allemagne, à Malte, aux Pays-Bas, en Inde et en Australie. Ses écrits récents ont été publiés dans C Magazine (avec Tania Willard), Paved Meant (Paved Arts), Qualitative Inquiry et Performance Matters Journal, ainsi que dans un numéro spécial de PUBLIC Journal qu'elle a codirigé avec Carla Taunton. Mme Decter est titulaire d'un doctorat en études culturelles de la Queens University et d'une maîtrise en nouveaux médias du Transart Institute. Elle a également bénéficié d'une bourse postdoctorale du CRSH à l'Université York.
